10 Tips to Get Kids to Listen the First Time

Do your kids listen the first time you give instructions or direct them to do a task?

Hmmm.

Would you like them to start? Here are 10 tips to help get your kids to follow what we at US Taekwondo refer as a “1 Rule.”

1. Use a firm and calm tone of voice: Speaking in a calm, firm tone can convey your authority and help your child understand the importance of the instruction.
2. Be specific about what you want them to do: Rather than giving vague instructions, be specific about what you want your child to do. For example, “Please put your shoes in the closet” is more specific than “Clean up your room.”
3. Get their attention before giving instructions: Before giving instructions, make sure you have your child’s attention. Ask them to stop what they are doing and look at you.
4. Avoid repeating instructions: Repeating instructions may give your child the impression that it is okay not to listen the first time. Instead, give your child one clear instruction and wait for them to complete it.
5. Keep instructions short and simple: Keep your instructions short and simple so that your child can easily understand and follow them.
6. Use nonverbal cues: Sometimes, nonverbal cues such as a nod or a hand gesture can help reinforce your message.
7. Give them time to finish what they are doing: If your child is in the middle of an activity, give them a few minutes to finish before giving them a new instruction.
8. Use positive reinforcement: When your child listens the first time, praise them and give them positive reinforcement, such as a hug or a high-five.
9. Use visual aids: Using pictures or visual aids can be helpful in getting your child to follow instructions. For example, a picture of a bed can help remind your child to make their bed in the morning.
10. Be consistent: Consistency is key when it comes to getting kids to listen the first time. Make sure you follow through with consequences and rewards consistently so that your child knows what to expect.
